Abraham Verghese’s resume is already impressive enough as a doctor and as an academic. It almost seems unfair to add “published novelist” to his credentials. And downright obscene that this ambitious novel succeeds so resoundingly. I was completely swept up in the lives of these characters. Utterly convinced by its sense of time and place. And emotionally devastated by their travails. Beautifully written and imagined, this novel deftly reveals entire lifetimes of joys and sorrows. Highly recommended.
